Guides / Before you adopt
Adopting vs. buying from a breeder
Adoption fees often include vaccines and spay or neuter.
Shelter and rescue adoption fees often include vaccines, microchipping and spay or neuter surgery, which can make adoption much cheaper up front. Breeder prices vary widely.
If you adopt
- Ask what the fee includes
- Ask about the pet's health history and behavior
- Look for fee-reduced adoption events
If you buy
- Visit in person and meet the parents if possible
- Ask for health records and genetic testing for the breed
- Avoid sellers who won't let you visit or want payment by wire or gift card: puppy scams are common
- Some breeds are prone to costly health conditions; research before you choose
