The true cost of a pet
Food is only the start. Plan for the whole year, and the whole life.
The adoption fee is the smallest part of what a pet costs. Over a dog or cat's lifetime, everyday care, vet visits and the occasional emergency add up to thousands of dollars.
Yearly costs to plan for
- Food and treats
- Flea, tick and heartworm prevention (as your vet recommends)
- Annual checkups and vaccines
- Grooming, for some breeds
- Toys, litter and supplies
- Boarding or pet sitting when you travel
- Licensing, where required
- An emergency vet fund or insurance
